Google Spreadsheet Budget Tutorial

Google spreadsheet budget tracking tutorial

NOTE: Updated (more advanced) version of this budget spreadsheet is now available – Budget Template Update

I have been tracking my own finances via google spreadsheets for YEARS. Yes, I have dabbled in the online budget trackers (mint.com, and a few others) but nothing kept me on track nearly as well as a good old fashioned DIY google spreadsheet budget tracker.

Friends have asked me to share my budget tracking template with them so many times and I always had good intentions to do so, however I also wanted to be able to walk them through how I use it before sending it over. Guess what? I created a video tutorial for everyone to access and utilize their own copy of my google spreadsheet budget tutorial!

My budget spreadsheet includes monthly income and expense budgeting/planning and tracking, as well as summary tabs to view your income, expenses, and total spending month over month for an entire year.

What’s great is that this google spreadsheet document is mostly formula driven, so all you have to do is input your expenses and income line items each month, then the spreadsheet populates the charts and summary tabs automatically for you!

    1. Hi Mary – Please try checking your spam folders/filters as it looks like it was sent on my end! If you still can’t find it then don’t hesitate to email me ([email protected]) and I will happily send you the link. Thank you!

  2. I’ve got the spreadsheet- thanks so much for sending it! I have a question- can I add additional expenses in column B? For example, can I add a line for car maintenance? I tried, but then it doesn’t show up as a category choice when I’m entering specific expenses. Can you please help? Thanks again!

  3. Hi there, I received the template, but for some reason, in the tab names August in the income section , when I click on the car¡teory tab to choose the concept (paycheck, etc) it says “loading” and nothing happens. I checked the other tabs for the other months and they are working fine. Could you help? Thanks!

    1. Thank you for pointing this out! I have fixed the template, but one way you can fix on your copy is to copy and paste column X from a future month’s tab into August and that should fix the problem. Thanks again!

  4. Firstly, Thanks a ton for putting together this amazing spreadsheet. Just started using it and entering my expenses in it is giving me a happy feeling 🙂 . Since you are a minimalist I was curious to know if you are planning to write blogs on budgeting, paying-off debt, managing finances etc (Dave Ramsey way of living) in the future? Thanks for your good work again!

    1. Thank you for the kind comment, Sanket! I haven’t been as focused on the budgeting side of organization but it’s likely that these topics will come up in the future. I think that budgeting is a natural part of an organized home 🙂 Thank you so much for your support, your feedback is always appreciated!
